The beginning of the museum activities in the
Shumen region dates back to 1857, and it is connected with the Revival teacher Sava Dobroplodni and
his school museum collecton that is amongst the earliest in the Bulgarian lands.
Nowadays the Regional Museum of History - Shumen is a
scientific and cultural institute with nine departments and an autonomous scientific group.
Its funds store more than 150 000 specimens from the chalcolithic period up to the present
with 15 000 displayed in 8 exhibition rooms. Temporary exhibitions are displayed constantly.
The museum has its own publication - "Proceedings of the
Museum of History, Shumen", a library with more than 25 000 volumes scientific literature
and periodical issues, restoration and preservation studios and a photo-labolatory. It makes
researches on the territory of the Shumen region.
In its structure it unifies the museums in the regions of Shumen and Targovishte.
